Assertiveness in the Workplace
A Dale Carnegie Training workshop conducted by Pauline Huie and Clark Merrill of Performance Training Associates, Inc. covering topics such as: Becoming aware of your comfort zone, striking a balance between being passive and aggressive, and how to disagree agreeably with cushions in communication. Co-sponsored with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.

Mentoring at the ASPIRE Conference
NAAAP Boston’s Professional Development Committee collaborated on the Asian American Women in Leadership 2008 Conference by gathering volunteer mentors to lead round table discussions at the conference’s luncheon.

Interviewing Workshop with 1-on-1 Practice
Workshop geared for college and graduate students who are interested in NAAAP Boston and want to improve their interviewing abilities. 30 students, from local area universities including Babson, Bentley, BU, Brandeis, Harvard, MIT, Tufts and Wellesley, participated in this high-energy and productive learning and networking event. Kim Wong presented on Interviewing basics, and 19 experienced Interviewers, guided by Bendan King of King & Bishop, volunteered their expertise to conduct the practice interviews and give individual feedback. The workshop was developed jointly by NAAAP Boston’s Student Outreach and Professional Development Committees and co-sponsored by Putnam Investments.

Career Success Stories of Accomplished Asian-Americans
Panelists Mr. Tony Zhang (Sr. VP Sovereign bank) and Dr. Mary Y. Lee (Assoc. Provost, Tufts University) outlined how their education and careers evolved, providing insights into their background as Asians in America, personal choices and changes they made, and career opportunities they were able to capitalize on. Seminar co-hosted with the Liberty Mutual Group.

Having a Powerful Presence
Christina Chan led an interactive workshop about what presence is and why it’s important, and then helped the group explore their own presence, situations where they felt lacking in presence, and what presence they would like to have.

The Guiding Light: Effectively Networking and Finding Mentors
Workshop co-host Putnam Investments provided veteran speakers on the subject and techniques of networking. They outlined some rules of networking such as being open minded, prepared, realistic, committed and determined to do whatever it takes, and covered the 7 competencies of networking and relationship building.

Power Networking
A series of 3 workshops led by Dale Carnegie Training (Clark Merrill and Pauline Huie): Breakthrough Vision - Leading an Intentional Life; Achieving Success - Breakthrough Human Relational Skills; and Managing Our Careers for Success & Results.

Interactive Resume Workshop: Senior HR representatives from Bentley College, Veritude, and Harvard University gave tips on good resume writing and critiqued member’s resumes.

Fast Networking: This is a high energy and structured workshop designed to help members practice and perfect their networking skills.

Home Buying 101: A panel comprised of a real estate agent, lawyer, mortgage lender, and home inspector gave tips to members on how to purchase a home.

Public Speaking Workshop:

JustSpeak! This workshop helps members overcome the fear of public speaking by providing a supportive atmosphere to help members improve their speaking/presentation skills.

Dinner with Professor Frank H. Wu: NAAAPBoston members discussed race in America with Howard University of Law’s Professor Wu.
