Betty Chu has been an active member of NAAAP Boston since 2002. After only a few months as a member, she decided to take an active role in the organization by volunteering to serve as a Co-Chair of the Speaker Planning Committee for the 2002 NAAAP National Convention held in Boston. In this capacity, she gained valuable skills, such as contacting and securing renowned speakers, planning and coordinating workshops, and finalizing key details for events. As a logical transition, Betty then assumed the role of Co-Chair of the NAAAP Boston Professional Development Committee for two years, developing and executing meaningful career-oriented events.
After stepping down as PDC Co-Chair, Betty continued her leadership within the organization by taking on the herculean task of designing, writing, and distributing a weekly electronic newsletter for the organization. Betty continued to do so for almost two years before passing on the torch to Shirley Chin in 2007. Betty completed her third term as a NAAAP Boston Board Member in 2008 and decided to take a more active role in the organization. Betty was recently elected as NAAAP Boston's Executive Vice President for the upcoming year.
Professionally, Betty has had many diverse experiences. For seven years, she taught in the Chelsea Public Schools as a second and third grade teacher, where she earned a nomination in 2001 for Disney Teacher of the Year. After taking a break from teaching in 2005, Betty decided to pursue her interests as an event planner by becoming a Program Coordinator for the Executive Education department at Harvard Business School. Next, Betty transitioned to FM&A, a destination management and event planning company located on Beacon Hill where she was a Program Manager. Although Betty enjoyed event planning as a career, she was eager to return to education and to work with children again. In 2008, Betty returned to teaching and is currently a Kindergarten Teacher at Belmont Day School, a co-ed independent school.
In her spare time, Betty enjoys cooking, reading, hanging out with family and friends, and doing community service both independently and with NAAAP Boston. Betty is fluent in both Cantonese and Spanish, and has taken classes in Mandarin, American Sign Language, and Italian for enjoyment.
