On early Saturday morning, May 7th, 5 spirited students and 1 brave volunteer came to the New England Center for Homeless Veteran (NECHV) Boston to learn how to make a couple of simple yet delicious Asian dishes and then donated the food to the center. The project leader, Jay Halim, along with the volunteers cooked 6 large food trays which were served for dinner that same night.
The volunteers had fun in the NECHV kitchen… prepping, cooking, cleaning, and chatting with some of the friendly NECHV staff. The first item that they made was Chinese chicken dish with green beans, fresh shiitake mushrooms, stir-fried in aromatic garlic, ginger, scallions, and sherry wine. The second item was Thai pork dish stir-fried in garlic, freshly-cut pineapples, delightful fish sauce, and freshly-squeezed lime juice then garnished with fresh cilantro and mint leaves. Are you hungry yet? Don’t worry, the recipes are available for free and can be viewed HERE.
Positive feedback was received both from the students, volunteer, and NECHV staff. The students truly enjoyed the class and would cook those dishes again at home. The NECHV staff can’t wait to have the students return to the kitchen, especially since the dishes were a big hit at the facility! NAAAP Community Service plans to make this a regular event, so watch the Calendar and Upcoming Events to sign up for the next “Cooking for a Cause” event, especially since it’s only limited to 5 students.
