On February 11th, Monte Jade New England invited NAAAP Boston members to attend a bio-industry career development seminar.
The distinguished panelists included Yushen Chang, M.S., Recruitment Consultant, Science Specialty, Randstad; Christopher Fang, M.D., MBA, Worldwide Director of Clinical Research and Medical Affairs, Depuy Spine Inc., A Johnson & Johnson Company and Chung-Ming Hsieh, Ph.D., Senior Group Leader, Abbott Bioresearch Center.
Yushen kicked it off with a presentation on how to write an eye-catching and effective resume which included tips on how to leverage networks to achieve effective job searches. Following Yushen's presentation was a panel discussion on how to secure, navigate and advance in the field of bio-technology.
Speaker bios:
- Ms. Yushen Chang
Ms. Chang took a career in Human Resources after receiving her master's degree in Genetics from Case Western Reserve University. She has a passion for working with and helping scientists in their career planning and development. She is a Recruitment Consultant in Science Specialty with a focus on staffing critical positions ranging from Drug Discovery to Clinical Development. She is currently working at Randstad, the second largest global human resources consulting company that specializes in staffing, HR solutions, and in-house services. At Randstad, Ms. Chang had been responsible for providing contractor staffing solutions on-site at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals as well as recruited for permanent openings and managed internal resume database at Millennium Pharmaceuticals. Presently, Ms Chang is based in Randstad's Harvard Square Cambridge office providing staffing expertise to biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, hospitals, and research institutions in the Greater Boston area.
- Dr. Christopher Fang
Dr. Fang has been highly focused on clinical research, evidence based medicine, and business development for some of the most noted companies in the industry. He is currently the Worldwide Director of Clinical Affairs for Depuy Spine, a Johnson and Johnson Company. Dr. Fang's responsibilities focus on registration and post market clinical activities worldwide. In this role, Dr. Fang is appointed to a variety of strategic positions on new product development, reimbursement, and business development. Dr. Fang serves as the Chair of the Clinical Research Committee responsible for selection and management of clinical programs and investigator initiated studies. Dr. Fang started his career at Idenix Pharmaceuticals where he led two global registration trials for Hepatitis B. Dr. Fang was later appointed as head of Cardiovascular Research and Medical Director of Global Drug Safety at Mitsubishi Pharma Corporation before moving on to Medtronic Vascular. As the Director of Clinical Affairs and Head of Global Clinical Safety, Dr. Fang was responsible for coronary and peripheral device trials. Dr. Fang completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California at Los Angeles, earned a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins, a M.D. from Cornell University Medical College, and a M.B.A from The Wharton School. He was trained in general surgery at University of Massachusetts and medical informatics at Massachusetts General Hospital.
- Dr. Chung-Ming Hsieh
Dr. Hsieh currently holds a Sr. Group Leader position at the Abbott Bioresearch Center. In this capacity he is responsible for leading a team of scientists and collaborating with drug discovery project teams to discover and engineer Abbott's therapeutic antibody drug candidates for clinical development in immunoscience, oncology, and neuroscience. For his contribution to Abbott's antibody generation platforms Dr. Hsieh was awarded the 2009 Donalee Tabern Outstanding Researcher Award by Abbott's Volwiler Society. Dr. Hsieh also serves on the strategic team responsible for evaluating in- and out-licensing opportunities of antibody platform technologies. As a drug discovery project leader, Dr. Hsieh leads a separate team for developing dual-targeting therapeutic biologics for autoimmune diseases. Prior to joining Abbott Dr. Hsieh was briefly a Scientist at Interleukin Genetics investigating the function of IL-1 gene promoter polymorphisms. Before that, Dr. Hsieh held a faculty position at the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital where he had previously completed his post-doctoral trainings. Dr. Hsieh contributed to 42 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and is listed as an inventor in 5 issued US patents and 15 US patent applications. Dr. Hsieh received his Doctor of Science from the Harvard School of Public Health in Biological Sciences and his Bachelor of Science from the National Taiwan University in Zoology.
