On Saturday, January 9th, a group of 18 NAAAP volunteers, led by Annie Liu, participated in the Family Nurturing Center Welcome Baby Volunteer event located in Dorchester, MA.
The event started off with Sandy Sachs, Child Development Specialist at the Family Nurturing Center, explaining the history and the cause of the Welcome Baby Basket program. The goal of the Welcome Baby Program is to celebrate new babies and their families with a home visit, a big basket of new gifts and books, and links to community services and resources.
The volunteers split up into two groups, one assembled the Welcome Baby Baskets while the other group put together resource packets. The Welcome Baby Baskets contained hand-made blankets, a book, baby toy, baby care product, and a baby outfit, all beautifully wrapped up in a basket. The resource packets included community resource information in various languages and would be delivered to families along with the baskets.
After an hour, the two groups switched up their tasks allowing everyone to put together baskets and resource packets. By 1:00 PM, the group was able to finish all the baskets and resource packets just as lunch was arriving. During lunch everyone gave a brief introduction and was able to further network with each other for the rest of the event.
